The word ’Ndrangheta comes from the Greek-derived Calabrian dialect — likely from “andragathía," meaning “heroism,” “courage,” or “manliness.” In Calabrian dialect, ’ndranghita came to mean honor, bravery, or strength, and by extension referred to the code of masculine honor among Calabrian men.
