The character Doña Euforbia, a gossiping, self-important "vecina" (neighboring matron), who claims refinement, status, and delicacy, but is loud, meddling, and decorative. Spanish and Spanish-American touring zarzuela companies in Chicago and New York ran rotating repertory — a full zarzuela one night, and a sainete or two the next.
Euphorbia is a large and diverse genus of flowering plants, commonly called spurge.
