Zuta, Jack
a Chicago gangster and political fixer active during Prohibition, one of the more colorful and slippery operators in the city’s underworld. Zuta operated on the North Side of Chicago, mainly as a brothel keeper, political bagman, and bookmaker. He was small in stature, wore thick glasses, and was often described as “the little fixer.” Not a gunman himself, he handled payoffs to police and politicians, particularly in the vice districts. By the mid-1920s, Zuta was a well-known underworld figure connected to the North Side Gang (the rivals of Al Capone’s South Side Outfit).
After the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1929), Zuta was one of the last surviving North Siders still active — and that made him a target. On August 1, 1930, Zuta was hiding out at the Lake View Resort near Delafield, Wisconsin — a quiet vacation spot west of Milwaukee; this is referred to as the "Lake Delafield Massacre." The killers were never caught but suspected to be members of Capone's Outfil.
